Zorn’s Disbelief on How Things Change

L’incrédulité de Zorn quant à la façon dont les choses changent
Early 1892, 20:17 – A smoke filled room in Paris, France. Zorn was very much in tune with the social norms of his day. Things were changing fast. While still considered scandalous, women were now smoking casually yet with confidence. Being an avid smoker himself and very much enjoying the company of women, it was natural for him to portray them as he saw them.
It was quite surprising when I bumped into him in Paris. He was however taken aback and curious as to why I was struggling with the smoking. I explained that I did not smoke and was not accustomed to it. He struggled to understand why as smoking was more and more prevalent every day. How could this be? I shared that within a century, things will have shifted significantly and that eventually it would be outlawed in many public places, and society in general will turn away from it due to its very harmful effects. With some convincing we made a variation of his “girl with cigarette” to reflect a time he has never known.
